It is an inhabited continent located in the Western Hemisphere, with an area of 17 million square kilometers,
and a population of approximately 423 million. This continent comprises 12 sovereign states, as well as several territories and islands belonging to foreign countries such as the United Kingdom and France.

It was named after Amerigo Vespucci, the first explorer to suggest that the lands of the New World were not part of East India.

It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west; to the north, it is bordered by North America and the Caribbean Sea; and to the south, it is bordered by the point where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans meet, as well as Antarctica.

The largest of these countries in terms of area and population is Brazil, with an area of approximately 8.5 million square kilometers and a population of 212 million,followed by Argentina, with an area of 2.7 million square kilometers; Peru, with an area of 1.2 million square kilometers; Colombia, with an area of 1.1 million square kilometers; and Bolivia, with an area of 1.0 million square kilometers.

In terms of population, Colombia ranks second with 52 million people, followed by Argentina with 46 million, Peru with 34 million, and Venezuela with 27 million.

The most populous capital city in South America is Lima, the capital of Peru, with a population of approximately 8.8 million, making it the second-largest capital in the New World after Mexico City (9.2 million).

It is home to the Amazon, the second-longest river in the world after the Nile.

The largest island in South America is Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, a large island located at the southernmost tip of the continent, with an area of 47,000 square kilometers. Argentina and Chile share sovereignty over the island, with the eastern part belonging to Argentina and the western part to Chile.

South America is considered one of the most biologically diverse continents on Earth. It is home to many species of animals, such as llamas, anacondas, piranhas, yaguars, peccaries, and tapirs—all of which are unique and fascinating.
